ISSST2013 is no doubt a US-centric symposium.  It’s always been held in the United States and it is dominated by participants from US academic institutions, even if several of the participants currently working at US universities are originally from other countries.

Nevertheless, it’s clear that the symposium has global reach.  Here’s an updated heat map of hits on the ISSST2013 WordPress blog.hitmap 14 Dec

In previous ISSST years, Western European countries — the United Kingdom, Portugal and Norway, in particular — have been well represented.  China has also been a visible presence at previous conferences.  However, an ideal ISSST2013 will create more extensive opportunities to form lasting knowledge-sharing and creation relationships on a global scale.

Ideas for improving international interaction at ISSST2013 can be posted here.

However, reach isn’t just a matter of international travel.  ISSST has an online presence in several different places, including the new home page: http://, the old homepage, this blog, and the ISSST LinkedIn group.

By far the most popular route for viewers to this blog is LinkedIn, followed by direct clicks thru email, the conference home pages, and then social media like Twitter and Facebook.

Leading up the ISSST2013, and afterwards, I’ll be working to strengthen the virtual network that is ISSST thru multiple social media and cloud-based channels.  When these are successful, they ultimately form a virtual community of practice — something increasingly of interest to the National Science Foundation in the United States.
